A Patriotic Coaster in Kansas City: Part 21 of our Inverted Coaster Series

The next Inverted to open was in 2006 and it was at another Cedar Fair property, Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO.  Since the removal of the Orient Express, an Arrow Development Custom Looping Coaster, in 2003, the park was without a large looping coaster.  Given how reliable and impressive Inverted Coasters are, Patriot was the perfect replacement in spirit.

The tunnel at the start of Orient Express is still present and was repurposed for a Halloween attraction.  You can still see the spot where the ride support bolted to the footer.  This picture appears courtesy of http://www.negative-g.com/.

Contrary to popular belief, Patriot was not a direct replacement for the Arrow ride as it is located to the southwest of the Orient Express station and does not go where the old ride.  The ride layout is a stretched out version of Talon, but thanks to the additional space at Worlds of Fun, they could make the ride taller and faster.

Patriot Worlds of Fun Flex 4

Flex provided us with this great shot of the train flying above the station and entrance plaza of the ride.

The ride starts with a 149 feet tall lift hill and this is followed by a 123 feet drop.  This leads to an 89 feet tall Vertical Loop and its placement is interesting:  by moving it a few feet back, it could have wrapped around the lift hill, but it was not to be.  The train then flies under the lift hill and then up in the Zero G Roll.

Flex took this shot of the start of the lift hill and you can see where the supports were customised to fit the terrain.

Exiting the Zero G Roll, the train then goes up in the Immelmann and this leads to the 360° rising spiral which serves to slow the train down for the last inversion, the Flat Spin.  The ride then concludes with a diving 360° spiral.

The ride colors are very patriotic, fitting the name very well.  The track is red with a white stripe on the side of the spine.  The supports are blue and the station was covered in wood to better integrate it in the Americana section of the park. The trans have star covered wheel covers and are red, white and blue with yellow bracing.
